Chapter One

The story of León

“León” was the capital of the kingdom that carried the banner of war against al-Andalus in the 10th century. Almanzor entered it in 988 CE. In 1188 CE it hosted assemblies counted among the oldest parliaments in Europe, and its Gothic cathedral is famous for its stained glass.

    Ramiro II de León

The King of León who defeated Abd al-Rahman III at the battle of al-Khandaq (Simancas) in 939 CE.

Chamberlain of Córdoba, who stormed León in 988 CE during one of his great raids.

  3. 1171–1230

King of León whose 1188 assemblies UNESCO recognises as the “cradle of European parliamentarism”.

  4. 1852–1926

    Antoni Gaudí

He designed the Casa Botines building in León (1891–1892), and a seated statue of him stands in front of it.

Chapter Two

Places in León

21 places I chose, arranged in chapters. A gold star marks one of my favourite picks.

Heritage and monuments

2
  1. Cueva de Valporquero

    · Valporquero de Torío

A living cave where an underground river has carved its giant chambers over thousands of years, with artistic lighting that brings out the colours of the rock. It is one of the most beautiful caves in northern Spain.

Moderate effort · needs a car
A narrow mountain road from León (45 min) to a car park at the entrance. The tour is ~1.5 km indoors, with stairs and slopes, and the temperature is 7°—bring coats. Partly closed in winter. No public transport.

    My tip

A short route and a longer one. The temperature is around 7°, so bring warm clothes. It closes during the winter months.

  2. Iglesia de San Tirso (Sahagún)

    · Sahagún

One of the earliest examples of Spain's brick Mudéjar Romanesque (12th century), with its square tower, graded windows and blind arches. Sahagún was home to a great royal monastery where monks who had come from al-Andalus settled.

    Easy to reach
45 minutes from León by car, and a direct train from León or Palencia. Flat and easy; half an hour.

    My tip

Entry is free and it displays models of the town's landmarks. It opens from Wednesday to Sunday. Combine it with the nearby brick church of San Lorenzo.

Nature and walks

1
  1. Castrillo de los Polvazares

    · Castrillo de los Polvazares

A “Maragato” village, preserved as it has been for centuries, with houses of dark red stone, colourful wooden doors and a single cobbled street. It is one of the finest examples of the architecture of La Maragatería, near Astorga.

    What to see

The main street paved with stone · the houses of the Maragato muleteers with their wide courtyards · the small village church · the surrounding fields and the Teleno mountains on the horizon

Easy to reach · needs a car
6 km from Astorga by car, with no regular public transport. The single street is fairly flat, but its cobbles are rough on wheels; a visit takes 45 minutes.

    My tip

Cars are banned inside the village, so leave yours in the car park at the entrance. The most famous dish here is the “cocido maragato”, which contains pork, so ask for alternatives or simply visit.

Day trips

1
  1. Palacio de Gaudí (Astorga)

    · Astorga

An ancient Roman city (Asturica Augusta), known in Andalusi sources as Asturqa, and a key station on the pilgrim road to Santiago de Compostela. Its most notable building is the Episcopal Palace designed by Antoni Gaudí with white stone towers, alongside the cathedral and the Roman walls.

    What to see

Gaudí's Episcopal Palace (Pilgrimage Route Museum) · the cathedral with its baroque façade · the Roman walls and their walkway · the “Roman Astorga” trail and the excavated baths · the Chocolate Museum and the local Magdalena sweet · the town hall square and its clock with figures

Easy to reach · needs a car
About two and a half hours by car from Madrid, or 45 minutes from León. The centre is flat and small and is visited on foot, with parking near the walls. Suitable for older people and strollers.

    My tip

The palace takes about an hour. Combine it with the village of Castrillo de los Polvazares (6 km) in a single day from León. Ask whether the sweets are free of animal fat before you buy.

Experiences and family

4
  1. Las Médulas – Mirador de Orellán

    · Las Médulas (Ponferrada)

A view from another planet: red peaks and caves carved by the Romans, who demolished an entire mountain with water in search of gold. It became the largest gold mine in the Roman Empire and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The viewpoint overlooks the whole scene, and you can enter a narrow Roman tunnel.

Moderate effort · needs a car
By car only. From the Orellán car park it is a 10–15 minute uphill walk to the viewpoint, and the village trails take 1–3 hours over dirt paths. The viewpoint tunnel has a narrow staircase. No shade in summer; few restaurants in the village.

    My tip

Sunset and sunrise are the most beautiful times for the colours. The walking trails start from the village, and the road to the viewpoint is uphill, so bring water.

  2. Embalse de Riaño (Mirador de Las Hazas)

    · Riaño

A reservoir among the peaks of the Picos de Europa in León, resembling the Norwegian fjords. The old town of Riaño was submerged beneath it in 1987. From the Las Hazas platform the famous swing stretches over one of the most beautiful views in Spain.

Easy to reach · needs a car
A viewpoint on the N-625 road above Riaño, with a parking spot beside it and a short walk. Services in Riaño. Winding mountain roads.

    My tip

Go at sunset or in the morning to avoid the queue for the swing. In summer you can take a tourist boat or a kayak on the reservoir.

  3. Lago de Sanabria

    · Galende / Puebla de Sanabria (Zamora)

The largest glacial lake in the Iberian Peninsula, with clear water surrounded by mountains and forests, sandy beaches for swimming, pedal boats, picnic areas and a playground. Nearby is the village of Puebla de Sanabria with its castle and the Iberian wolf centre.

Easy to reach · needs a car
Practically by car only (a few buses to Puebla de Sanabria). Parking beside the beaches, and summer cafés. The water is very cold. Signal is weak in some outlying spots, and it is very cold in winter.

    My tip

Summer is for swimming, autumn for the colours and the quiet. Park near “El Fuxía” or “Los Arrieros”, and pack a picnic lunch.

Google Maps ↗Place pageIts location on our map is being checked
  4. Cascada de Nocedo

    · Nocedo de Curueño

A unique waterfall where a stream drops inside a rock cleft that looks like a cave, in the Curueño valley in the León mountains, near the Hoces de Valdeteja and the Valporquero cave. A rare theatrical scene right beside the road.

Moderate effort · needs a car
From the village of Nocedo, a trail of ~1.5 km, 30–45 min one way, with a wooden walkway through the narrow gorge and its bridges. Shade and coolness. No services.

    My tip

A very short walk from the road, but the ground is slippery. Combine it with the Valporquero cave on the same day.

Where to stay

6
  1. Camping El Cares Picos de Europa

    · Santa Marina de Valdeón

A mountain campsite in the Valdeón valley on the León side, surrounded by Picos de Europa peaks. It is the closest to the start of the famous Cares Trail from the Caín side, and offers daily walking and nature activities.

    My tip

The road to it is narrow and mountainous, so it does not suit very long motorhomes; a short camper van is better.

Google Maps ↗Place pageIts location on our map is being checked
  2. Parador de León (San Marcos)

A 16th-century pilgrims' monastery and inn with a plateresque façade, counted among the masterpieces of the Spanish Renaissance. It reopened after a complete restoration and is now one of the gems of the Paradores network. It has an art collection and an inner cloister that guests can visit.

    My tip

Its restaurant is one of the best in the Paradores and serves local León dishes. Book a room overlooking the river and the square, and set aside time to visit León Cathedral.

  3. Hotel Real Colegiata San Isidoro

    • Boutique

A hotel within part of the Royal Monastery of San Isidoro in the old quarter, with a large inner garden and full breakfast. A quiet, historic atmosphere.

    My tip

There is no bar — a plus for those who prefer quiet. Rooms vary in size, so ask for the largest.

  4. Hotel La Posada Regia

    • Boutique

A 14th-century house with stone walls and wooden beams in the old quarter, near the cathedral and Calle Ancha. An authentic rural atmosphere.

    My tip

The wooden floors creak and the insulation is limited, so it suits a short stay.

  5. Hotel NH Collection León Plaza Mayor

A four-star hotel on the Plaza Mayor near the cathedral, with one of the best breakfasts in the city. An excellent location for walking.

    My tip

The square is noisy at night at weekends, so ask for an interior room.

  6. Barceló León Conde Luna

A four-star hotel in central commercial León, with spacious suites and a short walk to the old quarter. A practical choice for families.

    My tip

The rooms are old-fashioned. The Essera car park nearby costs the same as the hotel's parking.
