One of my places in San Sebastián

Grottes de Sare

Sare

“The tour lasts around an hour; in French, with English and Spanish tours at set times. Bring a jacket. Photography is not allowed inside the cave. Reminder for the trip to France: carry your passport (and the visa or Spanish residence card) for each person.”

The largest caves in the French Basque Country, visited on a tour with a sound-and-light show telling Basque legends and the story of human presence there for 45,000 years, with a colony of bats. Around them is a garden with dolmens and a small museum.

What to see

The village of Sare with its square, the Basque “pelota” court, and the nearby La Rhune train.

Easy to reach, needs a car

55 minutes by car from San Sebastián; parking at the entrance, and the cave passages have steps.
