My tip“Climb to the castle for its walls and view; the museum is inside. In town there is an old quarter with stone mansions. Combine it with Moratalla (15 minutes away).”
A hill town north-west of Murcia, topped by a fortress of Andalusi origin that became the shrine of the “True Cross”. It is one of five cities in the world with a permanent “Holy Year”, and it is famous for the “Caballos del Vino” festival in May, which has nothing to do with drinking but is a race of decorated horses.
What to see
Walls of the castle of Andalusi origin · the old quarter · the Caballos del Vino museum · the “Fuentes del Marqués” spring · a view over the valley
Moderate effort, needs a car
A short, very steep climb to the castle, with car parks beneath it; inside the walls it is flat.
