- Morisco heritage
My tip“A winding mountain road (about an hour and a quarter from Granada); park the car at the village entrance and walk its alleys; the Alpujarran rugs and woven textiles make a good souvenir.”
The first of the three villages of the Barranco de Poqueira registered as a “historic-artistic ensemble”, with white houses, flat roofs covered in “launa” clay, Berber-style chimneys, and Andalusi irrigation channels that still water the terraces. In the Alpujarra, the Morisco revolt broke out on Christmas Eve 1568, against the 1567 decree that banned their language, dress and customs. After it was crushed they were expelled, and the villages were resettled with settlers from northern Spain.
Moderate effort, needs a car
By car on a winding mountain road (few ALSA buses from Granada). A car park at the village entrance, and very steep lanes with steps; hard going for pushchairs and the elderly. Restaurants and shops available.
