My tip“An hour and a quarter from Granada by a winding mountain road; a full day, and buy a hand-woven Alpujarran rug.”
White villages terraced on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada (Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira), with flat roofs and an Andalusi irrigation system. They were the last refuge of Muslims after the fall of Granada, where Boabdil was exiled. Then the Morisco revolt broke out (1568), led by Ibn Umayya.
What to see
Villages of Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira · flat roofs and Berber-style chimneys · Andalusi water channels and the “Fuente Agria” spring · handmade “jarapa” rugs · paths and bridges of the Poqueira gorge
How to get there
Alsa bus from Granada bus station to Pampaneira (≈2 h) — by car ≈1 h 15 min
Moderate effort, needs a car
By car on a narrow, winding mountain road (beware of travel sickness); few ALSA buses from Granada. Park at the village entrances; the lanes are very steep, with steps, and hard going for the elderly and for pushchairs. Restaurants and shops available. Snow possible in winter.
Address
Mirador de Poqueira, Bubión
