My tip“There is no interpretation centre for the battle; the walking route on Sierra Elvira above Atarfe passes the ruins of the city of Elvira, so beware of the exposed archaeological digs.”
On 1 July 1431 CE (834 AH) Juan II, King of Castile, defeated the army of Nasrid Granada at the foot of Mount Elvira on the outskirts of Granada, in a battle named after a small fig tree (Higueruela). It was one of the last major field battles before the Granada War, and it was depicted in a famous painting in the Hall of Battles at El Escorial. The site adjoins the ruins of Elvira, the capital of the kura before Granada.
Moderate effort, needs a car
On the slope of Sierra Elvira north of Atarfe; climbing dirt tracks with no shade, no services and not enough signposts. Interpretation centre in Atarfe (bus from Granada). Hot in summer.
