My pick
My tip“Inside, the visit is by accompanied tour only (in Spanish, about 45 minutes); pay in cash; photography is prohibited. The town itself is beautiful. Two hours from Cáceres.”
One of Spain’s most important monasteries (a UNESCO World Heritage site), blending Gothic and Mudéjar; it has a Mudéjar cloister with a fountain in the Andalusi style and paintings by Zurbarán. It is linked to Isabella and Columbus, and its name “Guadalupe” is a hybrid beginning with the Arabic word “wadi”.
Easy to reach, needs a car
One or two buses a day from Madrid, so a car is better; parking near the square, then a few steps up to the monastery. The interior tour takes 45 minutes on your feet. The town is sloping. Full services.
