Vejer de la Frontera
Unspoilt sandy Atlantic beaches with no equal in Europe: Zahara de los Atunes, Bolonia with its dunes and Roman remains, and Tarifa, where Tarif ibn Malik, the first of the Muslims to land, came ashore and from which you can see the mountains of Morocco; and Vejer de la Frontera, white on its hill.
- When to go
- May to September (winds can be strong at times)
- How long you need
- 3–5 days
- For whom
- Families, couples and lovers of history
Chapter One
The story of Vejer de la Frontera
Vejer is a white town on a hill. Some historians believe the Battle of Guadalete (711 CE), which opened al-Andalus, took place on its plains near Lake La Janda. On its coast stands Cape Trafalgar, where the famous naval battle of 1805 CE was fought, and its alleys still keep their Andalusi character.
Figures of Vejer de la Frontera
- d. around 720
Táriq ibn Ziyad
The conqueror of al-Andalus. His decisive victory over Roderic in 711 CE is thought to have taken place in these parts, though historians disagree on the matter.
- 1758–1805
Horatio Nelson
The British admiral who won and was killed in the Battle of Trafalgar off the coast of Vejer; on the cape stand a lighthouse and a memorial to the battle.
- 1756–1806
Federico Gravina
Commander of the Spanish fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar; he was wounded there and died of his wounds.
Chapter Two
Places in Vejer de la Frontera
19 places I chose, arranged in chapters. A gold star marks one of my favourite picks.
Heritage and monuments
3Centro histórico de Vejer de la Frontera
One of the most beautiful white villages in Spain, on a hill overlooking the Atlantic, with walls, four gates and maze-like alleys that carry the Andalusi-Moroccan character. Its women were known for the cobijada, a garment similar to the haik.
My tip
Go up in the afternoon and wander without a map; El Palmar beach is close by for sunset.
Laguna de la Janda (campo de batalla de Guadalete)
In Ramadan 92 AH (July 711 CE) Táriq ibn Ziyad defeated the Gothic army led by Roderic “on the plain of Frontera on the banks of the Wadi Lakka or Wadi Bakka”, as Enan says. It is likely that the reference is to the Barbate river and Lake La Janda, not the Wadi Lakka (Guadalete) known today; with this battle al-Andalus was opened.
- Easy to reach · needs a car
- A wide farmland plain where the lake has dried up, seen from the country roads between Vejer and Tahivilla. No signs, no services, no shade. The strong east wind.
My tip
The old Lake La Janda is dry today and has become pasture and a bird reserve between Vejer and Facinas. Some dirt tracks are private, so enter by the signposted Facinas–Benalup road.
Iglesia del Divino Salvador (Vejer)
- Originally a mosque (probably)
The Gothic-Mudéjar church stands on the site of Vejer's mosque, and its tower is thought to be built on its minaret. Today only the orientation of the building and some of its lower walls can be seen of the mosque.
My tip
The opening times are short and vary; stop in front of it as you wander through the old town's alleys.

Nature and walks
2Playa de Bolonia
· Bolonia (Tarifa)
One of the most beautiful beaches in Spain and one of the least built-up: white sand, turquoise water and a huge dune (Duna de Bolonia), a natural landmark. On its edge are the ruins of the Roman city of Baelo Claudia. The water is a little cooler than the Mediterranean (20–22° in summer).
- Easy to reach · needs a car
- By car on the N-340 (20 minutes from Tarifa) to car parks near the sand (paid in summer); only a limited summer bus. Simple restaurants and toilets. The climb up the dune is sandy and very steep. No shade; the levante wind can spoil the day.
My tip
Visit the ruins in the morning, then the beach; climbing the dune is fun for children. The east wind (levante) can be strong, so check the forecast. Simple restaurants on the beach.
Playa de Zahara de los Atunes
· Zahara de los Atunes
A golden sand beach stretching for kilometres with little development on the Costa de la Luz, in front of the fishing village famous for its almadraba tuna fishing since the time of al-Andalus. Refreshing Atlantic water (20–22°) and very fine sand.
My tip
Suitable for families in summer with lifeguards on duty; choose days without the levante wind. Try the bluefin tuna dishes in the village (their season is May–June).
Day trips
1Conil de la Frontera – Torre de Guzmán
· Conil de la Frontera
A white fishing town on the Atlantic coast between Cádiz and Vejer, with wide sandy beaches and a famous sunset. Its centre has the Torre de Guzmán (1299 CE), one of the remains of its fortress. It is known for bluefin tuna from the almadraba traps, which are of Arabic origin.
What to see
The Torre de Guzmán (1299 CE) and its view · the white old town and the Puerta de la Bella · La Fontanilla beach · the coves of Los Bucios and Roche · the fishermen's harbour and fish market
My tip
About 40 min from Cádiz and 15 min from Vejer. The old town is almost flat and easy to walk (1–2 hours), and the tower is free, with a narrow staircase. Its best-known beaches are La Fontanilla and Los Bucios (caves and beautiful rocks).
