One of my places in Marbella

Castillo de Jimena de la Frontera

Jimena de la Frontera

Dr. Abdulmajeed Al-MudarraMy tip
“Free and open until the evening. The road climbs and is narrow, so leave the car in town and wear suitable footwear.”

A fortress on a rock overlooking the Hozgarganta valley near Gibraltar. The Nasrids and the Marinids held it in turn in the 13th and 14th centuries, and it remained a border fortress until 1454 CE. What remains is walls, a round tower, cisterns and an ancient rock-cut cemetery.

Moderate effort, needs a car

By car (or the Algeciras–Ronda train to a station 2 km away). From the town, a 15–20 minute climb on a very steep narrow road, then rough earth and stone ground inside the fortress. No shade or services at the top; cafés in the town.
