My tip“Best time: morning for shopping before the crowds, and evening to see the lights of Gran Vía. International restaurant chains and halal burgers are nearby, and there are Moroccan and Levantine restaurants on the side streets. It is the highest-risk area in Madrid for pickpocketing: do not put your phone in your back pocket.”
Madrid’s pulsing center: the Puerta del Sol, the zero point of Spain’s roads, and the Gran Vía, its most famous street, with its grand buildings, theaters and shops. A mass shopping area with musical theaters and constant crowds. Most of the historic neighborhoods branch off from here on foot.
What to see
The Puerta del Sol square and the statue of the bear and the madroño tree · the Metrópolis building · Calle de Preciados for shopping · the rooftop of El Corte Inglés Callao · the Telefónica building · the Gran Vía theatres
