The largest royal palace in Western Europe (more than 3000 rooms), built in the 18th century on the site of the “palace” (Alcázar), which was originally an Umayyad fortress built by Emir Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman in the 9th century as the nucleus of the city of “Mayrit”. Its sumptuous halls, the Throne Room and the Royal Armoury are among the finest in Spain.
