“Best time: the morning for the museums, then a stroll in the late afternoon. Many restaurants serve seafood and vegetables, and there are Lebanese and Moroccan restaurants downtown; avoid “cocido” as it contains pork. Generally safe, with the usual caution in Plaza de Santa Ana at night.”

The Spanish literary quarter where Cervantes, Lope de Vega and Quevedo lived. Its pavements are decorated with literary quotations engraved in bronze. It lies between Plaza de Santa Ana and the Museo Nacional del Prado, combining culture, cafés and theaters. Its streets are quiet by day and come alive in the evening.
