My tip“An hour and 30 minutes by car, and it combines well with Toledo on the same day; sunset is the best time.”
A row of white windmills on a hill above the La Mancha plain, the famous setting of “Don Quixote”, next to a castle that the Almoravids and Castile fought over in the 11th century.
What to see
The windmills on the hill (some can be entered) · the castle of “La Muela”, built on an Andalusi fort that saw the 1097 battle · the Plaza de España in the town · the Rosa del Azafrán festival in late October · sunset over the La Mancha plain
How to get there
Bus from Estación Sur (Méndez Álvaro) (≈2 h) — by car ≈1 h 45 min
Easy to reach, needs a car
By car in practice (a few buses from Madrid). An asphalt road climbs to the windmills and castle, with a car park beside them. Strong wind and no shade; hot in summer. Restaurants in the town at the foot of the hill.
