My tip“An hour and 40 minutes by car; have lunch or spend a night in the Parador inside the castle for an unforgettable experience.”
A medieval town built on the frontier of al-Andalus near Medinaceli, overlooked by a castle whose origin is an Islamic kasbah. It later became the seat of bishops and then a historic parador hotel, with steep stone streets and a beautiful Renaissance square.
What to see
The castle (Parador) built on the Andalusi alcazaba · the cathedral and the statue of “El Doncel” · the arcaded Plaza Mayor · the medieval main street and the Puerta de Hierro · the medieval tourist train from Madrid in its seasons
How to get there
Media Distancia train from Chamartín (≈1 h 30 min) — by car ≈1 h 30 min
Moderate effort
Regional train from Chamartín (few trips) or by car. The castle and parador are at the top of the town, a 10–15 minute climb up sloping paved streets; the parador can be reached by car. Good services in the town.
