My tip“You can have coffee in the lobby of the Parador without staying there. Combine it with Covarrubias (25 min) and Silos in one day from Burgos.”
A town on a rise above the Arlanza river, re-planned in the early 17th century by the Duke of Lerma, the powerful minister of Philip III, who turned it into a small royal court: one of the widest squares in Spain and a majestic ducal palace, today the Parador hotel.
What to see
The ducal palace (the Parador) and its inner courtyard · the vast great square · the Duke’s elevated walkway towards the monasteries · the collegiate church of San Pedro · the Los Arcos viewpoint over the Arlanza valley.
Easy to reach, needs a car
40 minutes south of Burgos on the A-1, with buses from Burgos and Madrid. The town sits on a hill but the square is flat; an hour and a half.
Address
Pl. Mayor, 09340 Lerma, Burgos
